Champion Racing
has established itself as one of the top
“privateer” motor racing teams in the world.
Established in 1994, six years after Champion
Racing President Dave Maraj started his Champion
Audi and Champion Porsche dealerships in Pompano
Beach, Florida, the 40-strong team has proven
its mettle against some of the best teams and
manufacturers in racing.
Champion
Racing's Audi R8 LMP-900 program began in
February 2001, when it was announced that
Champion would field an R8 Prototype in the full
2001 American Le Mans Series as well as making
the team's first-ever appearance at the
prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours.
Champion
Racing's Audi R8 Le Mans Prototype program had
an outstanding inaugural year in the American Le
Mans Series, including Champion's first assault
on the legendary Le Mans 24 Hour Race. For 2002
Champion Racing welcomed ADT Security Services
as Primary Sponsor for the Audi R8 program,
including contesting the full American Le Mans
Series schedule.
In the American
Le Mans Series, Champion Racing, the first Audi
“customer” team to race an R8 LMP900
sports-prototype, sought to build on its
previous 16 top-five finishes (2001/2), taking
four outright wins in 2003 (Herbert/Lehto),
including the prestigious 1000-mile Petit Le
Mans.
The ADT/Champion
Audi R8 had a very successful 2003 racing season
by winning the American Le Mans series Road
Atlanta race in June, the Road America race in
August, the Miami race in September and the
final race of the season at Road Atlanta in
October.
In its return
to the Le Mans 24 Hour race in 2003 after
debuting there in 2001, the Champion R8 team (Pirro/Lehto/Johansson)
placed third overall, becoming the first
American team in nineteen years to earn an
overall podium finish in the French endurance
classic.
Don Skuta, Champion's Vice President, has a
simple explanation for the company's racing
success, "Our efforts on the track serve to
showcase the same top-of-the-line automobiles we
have in our showroom. Racing allows us to
demonstrate to our customers that our cars can
compete against other high performance vehicles
in the world."
